Winnefred Blythe is not a typical regency heroine. She has practically no skills for circumnavigating the ton, has never had a season and is absolutely content to live her life in Scotland on her small farm. Fate and Lord Gideon Haverston and her best friend, Lilly have other plans for her.

Winnefred has lived with Lilly for years alone and forgotten by most everyone. Her father died and he left her to be taken care of by Gideon’s father who left her alone in Scotland with only a young Lilly to watch over her. When Gideon discovers that she has been a ward of the family for years, he investigates and what he finds amazes him.

Winnefred and Lilly have been living in poverty for years and even though it is not his fault, Gideon sets about to make amends. Both he and Lilly feel Winnefred should have a London season. Winnefred is against this. She does not want to change and she does not want to leave Scotland, she likes her life but she also loves Lilly and sensing that Lilly would like to return to London she agrees to deportment and dancing lessons and learning the ins and outs of the ton.

Lilly genuinely likes Gideon but she is aware that he wants nothing to do with marriage. He is recovering from terrible memories of the Napoleonic war and he pushes people away. He has nightly dreams where he revisits some horrible places on the Continent.

The two leads have a nice little romance that grows slowly, at times a little too slowly, especially in Scotland. The reader learns early that Winnefred is capable, hard working and stubborn and that Gideon is honorable, generous and kind. They stay that way all through this novel which at times proves to be their downfall, Winnefred can be obstinate and Gideon can be way too duty bound. This couple is not a combustible on-fire-pair, more like on low simmer with a few hot spots here and there. They have a believable romance and Gideon especially is a memorable figure.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Kind of Story. Extra credit for the humor.

It's hard to imagine two more likable, worthy, fully fleshed out protagonists who are so admirable for all their assets & defects. She is a spirited, selfless, independent heroine resourceful by nature & necessity. He is a generous, compassionate, benevolent hero riddled & ruled by unearned guilt. It was clear early on that these two were meant to be together despite their class differences. She was exactly what he needed & he was everything she wanted. They were sensitive to each other’s feelings & moods & interacted with kindness & humor expressed in friendly banter that generated chuckles & laugh-out-loud moment for this reader. I give extra credit for humor in a story.

Their romance developed naturally & gradually as they came to know & appreciate each other although it took an outburst of fury & flight to finally clear the way to their HEA. I don’t understand the “too much sex” criticisms. Their one love scene began on page 273 (88%) & ended at page 275 (89%) on my device. It was moving & tender & everything a love scene should be. This story never dragged & was never rushed. I consumed it slowly in smaller bites than usual because I didn’t want it to end. Now that it has, I feel compelled to write a review by way of thanks to the author & encouragement to more potential readers. Yes, I loved this story.

Finally, a strong heroine who STAYS a strong heroine! I really do get tired of a strong, intelligent heroine who falls in love and basically changes all her feisty ways to become a lady. This one doesn't. At age 13, Winnifred is shipped off to a farm in Scotland by the wife of her guardian. She is accompanied by her not much older governess. They are left there for 12 years with little money and no servants. Survival was hard but they planted a garden, did sewing, and raised a few animals. Then the new marquess discovers their existence for the first time and sends his younger brother to retrieve them. Lord Gideon arrives to tell them of their good fortune but is attacked by them instead when they mistakenly take him for a thief. "Freddy" is not enthusiastic at all to learn that they are to travel to London, but agrees for the sake of her friend/governess Lilly.

The characters are all extremely well done. Freddy is everything that I look for in a heroine. I love that she does not lose her strong independent ways and refuses to settle for less than she really wants. Gideon's sense of honor endeared him to me. Meeting the two women and understanding what they had gone through because of his larcenous stepmother, he wanted to do everything he could to make things right. I also felt sorry for him because of the PTSD he suffered from the loss of his young shipmates. It did start to annoy me, though, when he kept refusing to consider marriage to Freddy because of it. I found it a little hard to see how it related to marriage, but I do know that mental problems do not always make for rational thinking. The witty dialogue between Freddy and Gideon kept me smiling through much of the book. Freddy was such a character! I also enjoyed the secondary romance of Lilly and Gideon's brother and, lest I forget...Claire the goat was a charmer.

For those interested: I only remember one sexual encounter and it could easily be skipped over.

Winnefred has been treated like a burden her entire life and has made a home for herself and her friend and lone companion at a small farm in Scotland. When Gideon learns that this ward of his father's has been struggling due to the machinations of his stepmother, he seeks to make things right. She is unconventional, not a beauty, resourceful, kind and so on. She's also female who doesn't turn into a doormat when the hero arrives. Gideon, was swoon worthy to me. He had a dry off beat humor that matched Winnefred's. Once a sea captain, he has been injured and lives with a limp and cane. His biggest hurdle though is what happened during the last battle he went through. He has nightmares and blames himself. I liked so much about this story. They way they fell in love. Enjoyed the secondary characters who were solidly secondary. This story was all about the H/h. They spent time together, interacted. There was no crazy villain or subplot to drive them apart. I was always smack in the middle of the action and disappointed when it ended.

To address other reviewers (and everyone is entitled to their own opinion) concerns about all the foul language and sex. I suppose that subjective. One sex scene at about 85% was mildly detailed and while there might have been ripe language here and there, I don't recall any deity's name being taken in vain. I just wanted to point that out as a person who dislikes too much sex.

Gideon Haverston is brother to a marquess. His constant nightmares about his final sea battle and it's consequences ensure his promise to himself he will never take responsibility for another living person ever again. However he is tasked by his brother with finding Miss Winnefred Blythe, a young woman who had been placed in their father's care when she was thirteen years old. Knowing she had been cheated of her full annual income by his stepmother, he is unprepared for how badly off she really is.
Winnefred has survived on £5 annual income in a house in Scotland. Living in the gardener's cottage rather than the main house, she ekes out a poor living alongside her friend Lilly, barely subsisting on what they grow. She has known nothing but rejection and being passed on as another person's responsibility all her life.I

I cannot say when I have enjoyed a regency romance so much. The dialogue is sharp, humerous and witty throughout. The two main characters are so refreshing. Winnifred is so natural with none of the veneer that ladies of the town have. She is direct, hard working and knows how to curse while Gideon has a marvellous sense of the ridiculous.

This is the first book I have read by this author, but if this is the standard I shall definitely seem out more. Only one criticism... bubbies?

This book was a lovely find, a second chance in life given to two women whom life has spared nothing.
It was essentially Winnefred Blythe’s journey to her HEA, a rather bumpy road.
Freddie never wanted to leave her dear small countryside in Scotland, but to please her only friend, she is willing. She is like that, always thinking to the others before herself.
Most of her life she has been a burden, a charge passed from one to another, until she was forgotten, so when Lord Gideon Haverston décides it is time his family rights the wrong they did to her, she refuses to become his charge. She will agree to be his friend or more but not an expense. It was funny to watch Freddie struggles with the rules and etiquette, openly sharing her difficulties and her lack of understanding of what is done or not but also it was nice to see that nothing could crush her spirit.
Well, except Gideon’s rebuff.
Gideon suffers from a heavy guilt, he is alive and not his men, why he keeps people at arm’s length. By doing this, he harms Winnefred, he tries to stay clear and far from her but he is also drawn to her. So he hurts her to ward her off.
He plays a game of cat and mouse so when it blew off his face, he does not know how to react properly.
I would have loved more groveling, Freddie was the persistant one, having faith in their story, she went after what she wanted when Gideon played hot and cold with her.
But in all, it was a great story of healing for them both.

A kind Marquess and his brother decide to address the sins of their stepmother who embezzled from their father’s estate. This involves tracking down the instances of theft and where possible, rectifying them. In this case, virtue is truly its own reward as both brothers meet their soulmates.

A wonderful caste of characters, some pretty horrific war guilt, gritty and resourceful heroines. Well written and very satisfying.

What a great surprise to find in my Kindle on vacation! I will do little synopsis just that it is about two women who were basically left to fend for themselves as nothing more than teenagers in an almost abandoned home of their guardian in Scotland. When the error is discovered, Gideon, is sent to rectify the matter. All the characters in the story were delightful and not overly blown as sometimes happens. Everyone seemed human and possible, not too saintly, too innocent etc. There is wit and humor and the angst not overdone. I hate that in most historicals, someone frets for half a book over something that is not worth fretting over or could easily be overcome through a simple conversation. Every time I thought that this story would head down the usual path, (I would look at the amount of book left and think, okay here comes 5 chapters of misunderstandings) Alissa would have the H and h actually have a conversation that would move things along. Bravo for her! Of course, not everything comes out at once, but at least you can still respect the characters as not being complete morons. I found the plotting and writing terrific, the length just right and my only minor complaint is that there could have been more dialogue between two other characters who reconciled after a lengthy separation. (Trying not to give too much away) You can't go wrong with this novel and I am already headed into the second one. For those who don't care for sexual scenes there is one short one and could easily be skimmed; don't stay away because of that, you'll be missing a true gem!
