Interesting and sad, but the language was so bad it was tough to read. I felt for this character, a teen girl immigrant from Haiti whose mom was detained en route to America and she had to continue on her own. Surviving in inner city Detroit with extended family and a very different culture.
I was really looking forward to this one after all the acclaim, but ultimately I just wasn’t that interested in the characters. It was difficult to picture them—all the girls who serve as the main and supporting characters are only slightly different from one another.
The voice wasn’t really that strong either—I kept picturing the adult who wrote the book.
Since I'm not familiar with Hatian culture I was a little lost reading this.... The ending went a little too fast for my liking, I was left a little disappointed! Not sure how I feel about this book yet.
