5.0 out of 5 starsA must read for those who love physics or who want to get elementary basics right
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 25 December 2022
Very well written. Nothing beats how Mr. Lewin puts forward a topic. I studied physics 20 years back and still most of the topics he explained got me thinking of how easy it would have been had my teachers explained it like this. I'm very happy to have bought this book.

2.0 out of 5 starsTotally overrated book

Lots of filler material. Takes a long time to get to the main stuff. Overall, it's not half as interesting as it claims to be, or the ratings suggest.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book will explain the magic of Physics in our daily lives

Walter Lewin is a Dutch astrophysicist and former professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Lewin takes readers on a marvelous journey in this book opening our eyes as never before to the amazing beauty and power with which physics can reveal the hidden workings of the world all around us.

According to Lewin "Physics allows us to see the invisible forces at play all around us, from gravity to electromagnetism." In this books he had explained the phenomenons that we experience in our daily lives like Rainbows, electricity, magnetism etc in very simple and funny way.
You just need to know basic primary class physics and mathematics to understand this book. He will introduce you to a mystery and then solve it for you in very easy way, though it get complicated at the last chapters which are mostly about astrophysics.

Chapters at last about astrophysics could have been more explanatory with real life examples.

This book can be read by anyone who has little bit knowledge of Physics and mathematics.

Highly recommended for the teachers/aspiring teachers of any subject as Lewin has showed how a subject can be made intresting and hilarious and at the same time can be easily explained with examples

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover the Mysteries and Wonders of Science by the Great Lewin.....!!!!!

Because of Professor Lewin, I am now fascinated by science. Lewin showed us that history can be opposite of dull if one finds the right book. I also loved to watch the classes of Lewin on YouTube. His teaching style is fun and energetic, and he seems to love to get his students involved in his experiments. He is constantly trying to give his readers gift Cause he's so enthusiastic about science, you get enthusiastic too, automatically.

Why can we snorkel no deeper than about one foot below the surface? Why the color of sky is Blue? Why are the colors of a rainbow always in the same order, and would it be possible to put our hand out and touch one? Whether introducing why the air smells so fresh after a lightning storm, why we briefly lose (and gain) weight when we ride in an elevator, or what the big bang would have sounded like had anyone existed to hear it, Lewin never ceases to surprise and delight with the extraordinary ability of physics to answer even the most elusive questions.

This book was on Bill Gates' top book in 2011. Prof. Lewin's method of teaching should be adopted by all professors. He teaches physics by holding experiments in class, and backs them up with formulas. He teaches not to cover the details in physics, but to uncover the beauty of the world thru physics.

This is the great WALTER LEWIN, my best teacher ever of physics, he makes you love physics and see the world in another way forever, in a way full of wonders and appreciations.I would definitely recommend this book for people whose interests are with science (even if it's just a little bit) and want to learn about the simple wonders of the world and the universe, finding them quite complex when reading about them. Discover the mysteries and wonders of science and let Lewin take you on his tour through the universe.

From his book:
"I learned that art is not only, or even mostly, about beauty; it is about discovery, and this is where art and physics come together for me."

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ FOR HIGH SCHOOL / ENGINEERING STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND SCIENCE ENTHUSIASTS

What else can you do other than be fascinated by Physics after reading this book. Wish I had come across and read this book when I was in high school / college. Even though its 20 years since I finished my high school, I read and re-read it as if I am taking an exam in about a week's time. Walter Lewin simply and truly rocks. This book is a must read for all science teachers (as an after thought for all teachers) simply for the thought process and creativity that Walter Lewin adopts to teach his favourite subject to students. His passion both for the subject and also for teaching the subject to students and interested people is evident throughout the book. He literally manages to take us into his classroom. If only there are more teachers as passionate and as thoughtful as Walter Lewin in delivering their content, students would queue up to be in school.

In this book, Walter Lewin covers topics that you would expect in a basic Physics book - Bodies in Motion, Sound, Light, Electricity, Magnetism et al. However, there are no fancy and detailed equations and problems like standard physics book. The focus and method is totally unconventional and the situations that are used to describe the various concepts stem from everyday life. This ensures that the reader can appreciate (and start loving thereby stoking the inner fire) that Physics is all around us. The author achieves his stated aim of broadening the reader's horizon (instead of students' reproducing what's written on the book / blackboard).

Additionally the author shares his experience in X-ray astronomy and the strides that were made in understanding our universe due to its evolution over the last 5 decades. Very interesting topics pertaining to Neutron Stars, Black Holes, X-Ray Binaries and X-Ray Busters are covered in a lucid fashion drawing the reader ever closer to the subject.
