Aesthetics over money
Reviewed in India on 2 June 2019
I have tried Kindle Paperwhite, the base model Kindle and now Oasis. First of all if you want the tldr as to should you spend this much money over a e-reader, here is my verdict: Yes, if you are going to read only in Kindle nothing else.
This is epitome of design by Amazon. The ergonomics of this precious piece of gadgets are outmatched. I wish phones and tablets would think like this too. I am someone who puts industrial design over other aspects of a gadget so for me spending 21,000 Rs. is totally worth it.
Oasis as a Kindle:
Yes as a kindle product nothing gets better than Oasis. It just is something else. You can understand it when you hold it. The soft, cold metal and the gorgeous display, the tactile buttons and the almost perfect weight distribution sets this reader ahead, miles ahead of any competition. If you like to get away from physical books and you're afraid it won't feel the same anymore, trust me, Oasis will give you almost equal feel with your book as a whole.
Oasis as an e-reader:
As a legitimate e-reader, Oasis almost gets everything correct. But other cheaper versions get it correct too. There is almost no difference in Oasis and the recent Paperwhite. Waterproof, 300 ppi display, flat screen (Not recessed) and the same UI.
What it gets little bit better in is, the page turn buttons. They are placed right where your thumbs rest, they are tactile enough, they can be assigned as per your choice, they adjust according to orientation, and in some parts of your device you can use it to navigate the UI. Nothing more is required. Maybe Amazon can find a way to make buttons work in times we needed to scroll. But that's nitpicking.
I would compare Oasis and Paperwhite for their almost identical display. If you have the regular kindle, that is not in the competition at all. Except for the 12 LEDs in Oasis in place of 6 in Paperwhite, there is not much difference here. Contrast is almost the same and text is equally sharp. But guess what those double amount of LEDs light up the screen uniformly so you will notice much more comfort in brightness. The auto brightness is another feature which makes eye strain even more minimal. If you are a sucker for display or if you find yourself constantly changing the brightness in your current kindle or constantly trying to hold it in a particular place to set the angle correct, time to upgrade my friend.
Keep the display brightness to auto, WiFi off and 30-50 mins a day, you're good to go about 5-6 weeks. There is nothing much to talk about here. We charge almost every device daily today. And you will forget to charge your kindle because it lasts long enough. Charging is fast enough and there is a LED indicator. I mean this is perfect now.
You can invert colours, you can set custom fonts, you can bold till any level you want, you can change margins, you can change orientation, you can change the density of display. This is by far the main reason for me to read on an e-reader.
The software is responsive, maybe slow to change but you are not using it to navigate. Once you've set it up, you're gonna read. So it doesn't matter.
Purchasing books directly is a breeze. Downloading and whispersync is almost magical. You will never realise how many factors worked on background to make that perfect 30 min read. But it works so you don't need to know.
For me yes it is worth every penny. I don't care if the edges dig in my palm I will change hands, I don't care if the metal is cold I like it, I love that it balances nicely in my hand, I love that the e-ink display is almost like a real book page, and I love that the brightness changes magically and sets your eye for a treat, I love I can turn pages with button which are right below where my thumb is naturally resting. All this is worth it for me as Kindle now can be an investment for long term.
For you who likes to read sometimes, or already has many books, doesn't care about how sharp or contrasty the display is, or maybe you have a tablet and you're happy reading on it, go out and physically check out a kindle model. It will fancy you, and it will make you go wow. Get it then, If it still doesn't I am jealous of you as you are satisfied with the world the way it is around you. Kudos Amazon.
