Read this for a book club because it is one of the great novels of the 20th century and at first I found it very slow and hard going. It was worth persevering with though and by the second half, I felt invested in the character of Phillip. It is certainly a book that sparked a great discussion. What is art? What is love? What is the meaning of life? And finally, what of bondage? Can we escape it, or do we crave it?
Touted as being one of the best novels written. I often felt frustrated by his character, his obvious mistakes and his inability to see clearly, what was obvious to the reader. But then I started to warm to him and found that my warming came from the realisation that I saw myself in his stumblings. I would not rate the book as highly as the great Russian efforts, which I rate as the best ever written, but certainly Of Human Bondage is a work for its age. A most worthy read.
Tenía una edición antigua que compré en Irlanda y como es una de las 5 mejores novelas que he leído, quería tener una edición de lujo por el módico precio de 8,60. No veo el momento de empezar con su relectura. La recomiendo de todo corazón.
