I suddenly realised my 9 yr old was too old for his school dictionary and this is a nice size - small enough to fit on his desk - with a good range of words. Last night, while reading Harry Potter, we searched for ‘Bulwark’, ‘cavalcade’, ‘maw’ ‘perfidy’ and ‘Chimera’ and all were in there.
Bought for crossword puzzles but also to keep the brain ticking with words that are almost going out of fashion. In todays world of dumbing down the English language, I find this an invaluable tool for still composing well written emails and text messages. I am old fashioned and will always use what today calls 'long hand'.
Bit disappointed as the first word my Grandaughter wanted to know- was not there. I was attempting to show her that books are great and lets forget internet. We found the meaning in two seconds online. I was bombed out! The word? Decumbent. Doesnt even have Cumbent . Dont bother with this dictionary. I usually rate the Oxford over others but not on this occasion .
Small enough to fit into my son's school bag, yet full of all the definitions he may need to know. Oxford English is a fail safe brand and I have used it since I was at school; I am now 38! Highly recommend.
The dictionary is perfect great price and exactly what you want a dictionary for. Bought for my grandson aged 7 he picked this himself, it was just the size he wanted. He does not use it for school yet its just for home use. He loves looking up the meaning of words so I thought I would encourage it with his own dictionary.
