Ok, I've been into yoga and so forth for 40 years, yeah, I'm no young bod anymore, anyway, I only came across Gregor Meahle's books a couple of weeks ago and I can say in all honesty they're the best I have ever come across. This is real yoga not just calesthenics for the body bueatiful (increasingly difficult at my age anyway). I so wish these were available many years ago, please do yourself a favour and buy these books, even if you don't wish to engage in all the practices found within these books you'll have a depth of knowledge concerning yoga that most don't have including many who teach yoga exercises plus you will save yourself many years of research trying to fit everything together, you'll actually be able to read such texts as the Hathayogradipika and understand what's being said, seriously I recommend you buy all his books for it will save the need the buy many others to fill in any gaps one may have. And I agree with one reviewer below who says this book is more definitive than Light On Pranayama by Inyengar and in many ways a much more advanced and informative explanation of pranayama.
This book is life-changing. Aimed at those who have been practising yoga for some time, it gives detailed descriptions of the practice of Pranayama as practised by the ancient yogis up to the present day. The practices are clearly explained and if followed carefully (pay heed to the warnings of not going too quickly as it can take years to progress even to the first exercise) can profoundly alter your yoga practice. Most of these practices are not taught in regular yoga classes; however if you want to practice them, your teacher should be able to help and support you with them as they are mostly familiar to advanced yoga practitioners. The section on posture is the same as in his book on Yoga Meditation. Nevertheless this is well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone interested in deepening their yoga practice beyond the physical and developing high levels of concentration.
Excellent. No-nonsense but accessible to both beginner and experienced, advanced yogis looking to develop from an asana practice into the additional elements of practice. Plenty of additional references for further reading and good clear text. Unlike many yoga texts, this is practical, not preachy, choices are choices and Maehle recognises them as such
This is great book for everybody who wants to know more about yoga and want to deepen practice through pranayama. I wouldn't recommend it to the beginners but it's a book for every yoga teacher and devoted yoga student. This book reminds us that yoga is something much deeper than kick ass-ana practice which shape our body (this is only side effect) and asana is only one part of 8 yoga limps. It show us the importance of pranayama and the technique how to practice it. Author is aware that he was very lucky to study under the guidance of great yoga masters of 20th century and that not everybody is able to spend couple years in India to become the yoga teacher. He shares his knowledge and years of study in this book which is written in the language accessible to the western students.
I bought this book to help me with my pranayama practice and it hasn't let me down. Gregor's writing is clear and interesting, just like in his book Ashtanga Yoga: Practice and Philosophy. The way he explains every aspect of the pranayma and the importance of it, is great and that really has given me the final push to get back on pranayama. Every yogi should have this book!
I haven't even finished it yet but this is a great and detailed book, with lots of references you will not find anywhere else. Maehle's awesome, I would recommend his other books too, very detailed, never misses a trick.
Gregor shares his years of studying and knowledge, as with all of his Ashtanga books, in a clear but full way. Do yourself a favour and but this book to deepen your pranayama practice and understanding.
