UPDATE APRIL 6: Today, I made the Key Lime Magic Custard Cake for dessert. The cake took a bit of work to make but it was worth it. The recipe was a totally from scratch recipe and did not use a cake mix. I will have to admit there a good chunk of the recipes require the use of a cake mix. There are some scratch recipes available though.
Here's a listing of the ingredients used to bake the Key Lime Magic Custard Cake:
Eggs, separated Powdered sugar Butter Lime zest Key Lime juice or lime juice Flour Whole Milk Sweetened condensed milk
The Betty Crocker A Piece of Cake contains numerous modern cake recipes that range from traditional cakes to mug cakes. The photos are beautiful and the tips found within the book are terrific. Some of the recipes you'll find include:
Most of these recipes start with a box of cake mix. There is not one basic yellow cake in here. One recipe says add sparkle by dusting confectioner's sugar. Sparkle?! The "hacks" are well-worn advice, such as use a pastry brush to get grease into all the crannies of a pan. There is a reasonable variety, but bit odd, such as cakes with fruit, ice cream cake, and the flavor combination chapter has things like Red Velvet cake. This is just not a good basic book of easy cake recipes, unless you want to start with a mix. I rarely return anything to Amazon, but this is going back.
My daughter loves to bake and this cookbook has many unique yet easy recipes and we have loved everything we have tried especially the mint chocolate bunt cake. Recipes are detailed and easy to follow with great pictures. Have already purchased more to give as gifts.
