To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I expected more step by step for beginners tuition in this book but it’s lacking in that, and whilst it’s great to see what can be achieved (in the form of completed drawings) there’s nothing very much to show you how you reach that point which is disappointing. Also, it’s a very heavy paperback book and it frustratingly won’t stay open so that you can refer to examples whilst you attempt to draw.
There must be a better book out there on drawing. More clearly constructed exercises and better layout would have elevated this book, there is useful content but it seems to be a showcase for the author's own skills, every illustration is a drawing by him. Another amazon customer said 'I don't like this book' and I unfortunately, I agree.
Touches fleetingly on a wide range of topics. There are about 2 pages per specific subject (eg hair) used for 4-7 paragraphs and maybe 3-4 example sketches. The beginning of the book has some nice advice on visualising shapes, building shading and composition, but there's no deep insight. If you can already draw moderately well most this will be self evident. I was hoping for a book to help me improve but this is really a beginner book. Like far too many art instruction books, too much space is spent on example images or just wasted entirely.
