As for the book itself I really enjoyed it. It is Sanderson's deput and therefore his weakest, but even still it is amazing. I love Sanderson's unique magic systems and his brilliant world building. The magic system in this one is no exception despite how little of it we see for most of the book.
The characters were great. I loved our protagonists. Sarene is smart, strong, witty and resilient. Raoden was great to follow too though I loved Sarene more. Hrathen's POV was very intersting. His doubts regarding his religion added depth to his personality.
This book is more political than Sanderson's other works and I loved the political intrigue. It added a lot of twists to the plot and challenges for the characters to overcome.
I do want to mention that Sanderson's prose is very straightforward. If you enjoy beautiful or flowery writing, that may be an issue, but I personally didn't mind it because of his skill in other aspects of storytelling.
