Best novel after KIM, of British Raj
Reviewed in India on 3 September 2015
This is the best novel of George Orwell. This is of Burmese life during the Raj period when the writer was posted SP in Burma.HE was IP(Indian Police)
He experienced the British behavior towards natives, their arrogance, their superciliousness, corruption in India at that time and governance issues. His name is after Great Rudyard Kipling. He relinquished his post 1927 and went to England and started writing., in year 1927. His other two books, Animal Farm, 1984 made him very famous in English Language World over. As he was Police Officer, his observations were true and honest and he used these with bit fiction and made a good novel of English Language.
It was very unfortunate that he died very early age. He loved Kipling,, he followed him, and he despised him. There is no English Novel on Burmese life. What the British made of fine values in Burma, the military dictators slowly finished them - the freedom, democracy and progress after 1962 -the year of their take over. Now Burma is poorest and less progressed nation of the world. The intellectuals still remember Orwell and call him a Prophet.
Miss Emma Larkin has written very fine introduction. While she was searching his papers she got a paper and it was a fine piece of poetry from George Orwell. This is about John Flory- the hero of the Novel. I reproduce the same as under. She has written a very good book on George Orwell relating to his Burmese days.
JOHN FLORY BORN 1890
DIED OF DRINKS 1927
Here lie the bones of John Flory,
His story was the old, old story,
Money,Women, cards and gin,
were the four things that did him in,
He has spent sweat enough to swim in,
Making love to stupid women,
He has known misery past thinking,
In the dismal art of drinking.
Oh stranger, as you voyage here,
And read this welcome , shed no tear,
But take the simple gift I give,
And learn from me how not to live.
I RELISHED THIS NOVEL and recommend others to taste it. Rudyard Kipling, George Orwell are two great writers of British Raj, they will live for ever in India. Their contribution is immense for English Literature.
