5.0 out of 5 stars It combines all the elements I love so much about Ms. Chase’s books

The second book in Loretta Chase’s Difficult Dukes series has been a long time coming, but I’m delighted to say it was well worth the wait. It combines all the elements I love so much about Ms. Chase’s books - an entertaining story filled with fascinating characters, sparking wit, laugh-out-loud moments and a captivating romance.

I admit to having doubts that Ms. Chase could make Ashmont not only likeable, but also deserving of the heroine’s love. I’m pleased to say that my reservations proved groundless, because she does a splendid job. In A Duke in Shining Armor, Ashmont displayed none of the qualities of a true romantic hero. He may be handsome, rich and possessed of natural charm, but these attributes are far outweighed by his flaws. He’s an immature, irresponsible, reckless libertine who is forever causing mayhem with his silly pranks. If that wasn’t enough, he let his would-be bride slip through his fingers and nearly killed his best friend in a duel.

Cassandra is intelligent, strong-willed, impulsive and confident – a woman who fully embraces her individuality. As a member of the Andromeda Club, a ladies’ charity, she is fully aware of the poverty that exists and the injustices inflicted on those less fortunate than herself. I like how she doesn’t just play lip service to her charity work but is actively involved in it. She has strong political views and is not afraid to voice them in public, much to her father’s vexation. Hoping that a husband might curb Cassandra’s behaviour, he stipulates that her younger sister, Hyacinth, cannot marry until Cassandra herself weds. Despite everything, she clearly loves her family very much, but cannot deny her true self. Her father isn’t tyrannical but simply someone who loves his family and fears that his daughter’s behaviour will reflect badly on the whole family.

Ashmont is the last person Cassandra would ever consider marrying. As a young girl, she had fallen hopelessly in love with him and imagined that he would grow up to be somebody fine and noble, only to have her dreams crumble to dust. However, a carriage accident and scandal will change the course of both their lives.

Ashmont is totally captivated by Cassandra; he admires all the attributes other men find unattractive - her plain speaking, her intelligence, her confidence, and her impulsiveness. He’s knows that his looks and charm won’t carry any sway with Cassandra and he must gain her trust and respect. He knows it will be a Herculean task but he’s determined to do it. I enjoyed watching Ashmont gradually becoming the man Cassandra hoped he would be. He stops drinking and takes time to find out what’s important to Cassandra, and in doing so, comes to appreciate the constraints placed on women by society, and the plight of the poor, things he had previously been oblivious to. He comes to realise just how pointless his life has been until now.

Given her past disappointment, Cassandra finds it hard to trust or respect Ashmont because she’s certain he will break her heart all over again. But time and again, she is surprised by his actions, such as the obvious thought and care he’d taken in choosing the gift for Keeffe, or diffusing the situation with the rent collector, using restraint rather than his customary fists.

The chemistry between these two is positively delicious and their witty banter an absolute delight. Of course, the path to true love never runs smoothly and obstacles come in the form of Ashmont’s rival, Mr. Titus Owsley, (or as Ashmont refers to him, ‘Mr. Tight-Arse Oh-So-Holy’), and the vindictive Lady Bartham who sets out to destroy their new found happiness. Unlike so many other heroines, Cassandra is sensible enough to tell her parents the truth of the situation, and I love the scene where her mother, Lady deGriffe, thwarts Lady Bartham’s insidious scheming.

The story is rich in Ms. Chase’s trademark wit and humour and these are just a few of my favourites moments - the ‘umbrella fight’ which conjured up the most wonderful images in my mind, the letters between them after Keeffe’s accident, and Cassandra’s letter to Ashmont detailing ten events that had happened since he ‘staggered’ into her life. I also like how Ms. Chase always brings an element of social commentary to her books,

The secondary characters all add depth to the story and I particularly liked Keeffe, Cassandra’s groom, who is more than just a servant, and Sommers, Ashmont’s valet, who is prone to weeping at the state of master’s attire. I am looking forward to reading Alice & Blackwood’s story in the final book in the series, and also hoping that the obvious history between Ripley’s Aunt Julia and Ashmont’s Uncle Frederick will finally be revealed.

MY VERDICT: Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I WANT TO MARRY LUCIUS, THE DUKE OF ASHMOUNT
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 23 December 2020

First of all, I want to marry, Lucius, the Duke of Ashmount. He is a wonderful man. He is smart and funny and kind and thoughtful and when he chooses, he is quite charming. But, he has not always been this way.

He has been living his life as though the rules never apply to him. He spends a good portion of his days and nights drunk. In fact, at his own wedding he was very drunk and his bride ran away from him. In fact, she ran away with one of his best friends and now they are married to one another.

So, of course there was a duel. And during the duel, the Duke of Ashmount was drunk.
Afterwards, still drunk, he shoots one of the dueling pistols into the air.

The shot causes a young woman, Miss Cassandra Pomfret, to have a terrible accident. Her carriage is ruined, her maid is injured. The man who is her bodyguard is thrown from the carriage and terribly hurt. He is a former star jockey and from his days as a jockey he already has injuries. Things have just become much worse for him.

Cassandra has known Lucius since she was a little girl. But, he does not remember her in his inebriated state. Cassandra has a reputation as a gorgon, a Medusa and a woman who can make grown men cry.

Two people who are exceptional and not always in a good way….they are perfect for one another.

Ms Chase is one of the best romance authors I have ever read.

Her plots are exceptional and precise. Around every corner there is a new event which makes the reader drawn even further into the action.

Ms Chase creates characters who are absolutely wonderful people. They are human, imperfect, and absolutely fascinating.

This story is filled with everything a reader wants in a book.

Cassandra and “Duke” do not appear to be going in the same direction in life. She has become almost a joke in society. He is refused access to most genteel homes.

But, they are both intelligent, generous, kind hearted and very funny. She makes him feel that there are possibilities in his life. He makes her feel that she is beautiful and interesting.

But, because of his reputation, Cassandra will neither trust him nor believe in him. Lucius must work very hard to prove who he can be as a man. Cassandra must work very hard to come to a place where she can trust a man to be heroic and honest and true.

This is a story of growth and reformation. It is a story of two people who eventually find that there can be a common ground. It is a story about the love within families. Most of all, it is a story which is about human beings who find happiness.

I loved this book.

After a confrontation with Mr. Titus Owsley, a member of the House of Commons, Miss Cassandra Pomfret’s father lays down the law – he forbids Cassandra’s younger sister Hyacinth to marry or even participate in a season until the outspoken, opinionated Cassandra is wed.

Needing to get away, Cassandra sets out with her groom and maid to visit her former governess, but she never anticipated that the recently jilted Lucius Beckingham, the Duke of Ashmont would be at the coaching inn getting drunk after dueling with the Duke of Ripley, his former best friend turned bride thief! Nor did she think he would try to quiet a restless crowd by shooting into the air and spooking her horse, causing an accident that injured her groom and threatened to ruin her reputation. Nor did she ever expect or want him to insist that she marry him!

Cassandrea will never admit it – but Lucius was her first love and her hero, but over the years she realized that he never noticed her and she closed off her heart. She is content to be a spinster and refuses to wed Lucius, but when they are caught alone together a second time, she hatches a plan, she still won’t marry him but does agree to pretend to agree to marry him – especially since it seems her father is willing to let Hyacinth attend events with them. But she is clear – she can’t trust him and will not marry him.

No one is more surprised than Ashmont when he realizes that he really wants to marry Cassandra and sets out to win her over. It will be a long, uphill battle to win her hand with more than one person set on keeping them apart. But this is a battle Ashmont intends to win and soon winning her hand is not enough, he wants more – he wants to win her heart!

This was a well written, fast paced, fun twist on The Taming of the Shrew. Cassandra and Ashmont are perfect for each other and provide the reader with lots of witty banter and amusing moments without dragging the story into the realm of silly or fluffy. The book has humor, betrayals, great secondary characters, more than one “villain”, warm love scenes, blackmail and a very, very sweet ending. This is the second book in the series, but it can certainly be read as a standalone title. I really loved this book and happily recommend this title!

FINAL DECISION: Simply lovely romantic book. The hero and heroine move towards one another in this book without losing themselves. Wonderful read.

THE STORY: Cassandra Pomfret has known the Duke of Ashmont since she was a child. He was once her hero, and she had dreams of them together. But Ashmont disappointed her for years. He barely paid any attention to her and instead has spent his life being idle and wild. Cassandra has built a life for herself doing things of purpose. This life, however, is threatened by her father who refuses to allow Cassandra's younger sister to have her season until Cassandra marries. Even that prospect, however, is put at risk by Ashmont's presence, which seems to bring potential scandal in its wake.

OPINION: I really loved this story because Ashmont had to fight so hard for Cassandra. In the process, he grows and changes and finds a higher purpose in his life. There are external factors which push and pull these two characters together and apart, but this book is primarily the interactions between Ashmont and Cassandra. Her deep disappointment in him and his continued attempts to move towards her. I love a redemption story and Chase does an amazing job of making Ashmont's journey a personal one.

Cassandra is a strong woman who is unwilling to place herself into the hands of Ashmont because she knows that heartache will be the only result -- even if he is a duke. Her determination to tell him his failings and then his determination to make changes in his life animate this story.

The story is more romance than sex, and I loved that. I ended the book feeling that these characters had made extraordinary moves towards one another in a warm way.

WORTH MENTIONING: The book has a loose connection with the storyline of Shakespeare's The Taming of Shrew.

CONNECTED BOOKS: TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT THE DUKE is the second book in the Difficult Dukes series. The romance here is self-contained, and it is not necessary to have read the first book. Because this book overlaps with and continues from the events in the first book, however, reading the books in order gives more insight into the characters and their motivations.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

NOTE: I received an eARC of this book via Netgalley. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten Things é tudo o que se pode esperar de um roman

Inspirado na famosa peça de Shakespeare A Megera Domada, Ten Things I Hate About The Duke é o segundo título da série Difficult Dukes.
Realmente, a autora merece todas as estrelas.

I passed on this book many times because of the silly title. I'm just sorry that it took me so long to get to it. I love strong, intelligent heroines. I love eccentric characters. I truly love humor in my reading. When one book has it all I am on cloud nine. Cassandra Pomfret is often at odds with society because of her blunt ways. She doesn't care about balls and beaus. She has political views that she isn't shy about voicing (much to the dismay of her politician father) and works with several charities to help the poor. She has the ability to stop grown men in their tracks with her sharp tongue. Finally, her exasperated father has reached his limits with her last caper and lays down the law. If she doesn't marry, then her younger sister cannot marry either and must give up all her society events. The Duke of Ashmont (one of the Dis-Graceful Dukes) is the best looking man in England. Unfortunately, he is thoughtless, immature, and given to silly pranks worthy of a 12-year old. Cassandra cannot stand him. Less than a week after he was left at the altar, he encounters Cassandra and causes her to have a carriage accident in which her servant is severely injured. When the drunken duke tries to help (and gets in her way), she hits him with her hat, knocks him over, and proceeds to order him about. He has never had a woman treat him like that before and he is smitten. Their "courtship" is hilarious with one-liners that kept me chuckling. I loved this book and will surely reread it in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong Characters, Lots of Fun, and a Sweet & Satisfying Love Story

I have been anxiously awaiting the second book in this series. Loved the first one so much I’ve read it three times while awaiting this one! I will have to admit that when I found this book featured the Duke of Ashmont, it was a little bit of a let down as his character was so “over the top” in the first book. (Had hoped to hear more about Blackwood or Lady Charles and Sir Frederick). HOWEVER, this turned out to be a wonderful story!! Cassandra Pomfret and Ashmont were perfect for each other. Each very strong willed characters (which a woman would have to be if she married Ashmont). It was touching to see Ashmont mature and actually show a genuine interest in Cassandra and the causes she supported, all the while falling very much in love with her. All of the supporting characters, as usual, were very well done. The ever put-upon Sommers (Ashmont’s valet), Keefe (Cassandra’s tiger) and members of both families.

Of course, there were comical “incidents” throughout the book, presenting challenges for the couple. It was interesting to see Ashmont work very hard to “do the right thing” under these circumstances, and for the first time to truly begin to understand what “family” is all about. If you were a little put off by Ashmont in the first book, this one will change your mind about him. A very sweet love story, and one of emotional growth and self-realization (plus lots of fun as well). You will truly enjoy this story!

I was afraid to star this book because I was afraid it wouldn’t be as good as Ms Chase’s first book in this series (Duke inShining Armor). NEVER FEAR — I was not disappointed. The oblivious rich, spoiled man, the intelligent woman… misunderstandings, mishaps, (finally!) maturing of the disreputable duke. This book is on par with Lord of Scoundrels

Warum dann also nur 4,5 Sterne?
Klare Leseempfehlung.
