I ordered this book as I love the Barefoot Contessa shows and have always wanted to get one of her books. I was so disappointed when it arrived, whilst it is a lovely book I wouldn't be able to use it as the ingredients in a lot of the recipies are way out of my price range. Food writers really need to be aware that most people don't have a bottomless pit of money and are on tight budgets.
Not all the recipes from the tv show are in this book. I bought this book so I could stop printing out recipes and collecting piles of paper. Very disappointed that the recipes from the tv show are missing. I really like Ina’s style of cooking and teaching, but this was a real let down. Next time I will look at the book in a store before purchasing.
I absolutely love Ina, and learned more about cooking and entertaining from her than from anyone else. I own all of her cookbooks and turn to them whenever I’m planning a menu. That’s why I’m sad to say this one was a let down :(
I didn’t find too many recipes that jumped out at me as “must try!” The photos were not nearly as nice and appetizing as all of her other books. Almost every photo had the same basic composition, and so many recipes had 1” chunks of vegetables that they started to look the same.
I learned something incredibly important that I wish she had said in ever book: she ONLY uses Diamond Kosher salt. I’ve always used Morton’s Kosher salt, but she says if we use that brand, to cut the salt amount in half!!!! How has it taken her 10 cookbooks to tell me that??? No wonder my mom and occasional guest have told me some of her stuff is too salty. For that tip alone, the cookbook was worth it. However, I realllllly wish I knew that sooner!! :)
Unfortunately, this cookbook is not comparable to the rest of the collection by Ina Garten. The recipes are mediocre, and worst of all, many rely on ready-made sauces, like marinara in a jar... I’m sorry to offer a bad review of this cookbook, for which I had great expectations. Except for one or two recipes, Ike the filet of beef, I would not want to try any of these dishes. Ina did not get good advice in relation to this book. I’m a great fan of Ina, but this new cookbook is really uninspiring!
I am a huge fan and have all of Ina's cookbooks, but I agree that the last few seem to be recycling or tweeking other recipes. That said, I'm making the Daquiri recipe for cocktail hour today and the fried chicken sandwich for couch-gating the Hawkeye game this weekend. It'a a lovely looking book.
I bought this early to review and try some of the recipes to see if I wanted to give this as gifts for Christmas. I own a lot of Ina Garten cookbooks and I just didn’t see anything really inspiring or new here....perhaps if you are a first time buyer you might find this book interesting. I love her Make Ahead Cookbook, use it all the time...and I mean all the time....really streamlines entertaining and makes the day of so much more fun for me. Cooking for Jeffrey, which wasn’t one of my favorites, was better than this book. Ina needs to step it up and delivery some new and inspiring dishes. I kept my copy of the book, as I will probably make a couple of things in here, but I didn’t buy more for friends and I wouldn’t recommend the purchase of this book if you have all the others.
I have about all of Ina's BOOKS and A huge fan of The Barefoot Contessa programs I expected so much more than multiple Egg plant recipes, considering I am allergic to them and my family aren't fans. I also found more helpful techniques in all her other books than I found in this one. I am still a fan.
