5.0 out of 5 starsgood book for students who want to focus in their studies

Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport.
Cal Newport is already Professor and has done lots of research work. His job requires him to do do. Like mine (Faculty in Indian Institute of Technology). We need to have undivided attention on research and other works. It has become my main point to know the background of the author before reading any book (it helps)!!
I read this book in March 2019, when I was struggling to reduce my time spent on social media and wanted to focus on my research work. Things are liked out this book:
- It exposes our addiction on social media by means from the point of evolution.
- Ignorance is truly bliss sometimes, means if we use social media in a controlled way it helps us to focus on tasks which will help in our growth.
- It is not our fault we are glued to screens, engineers and behaviour scientists are paid lots of money to keep our eyeballs glued to their app. There are machine learning algorithms running behind the screen to push us towards targeted ads and stickier content.
- How come our ancestors didn’t have Instagram, Wassapp and Facebook and they lead a happy life ! Now we have become slaves of someone else approval on digital media.
- The point is to focus on few things which we value instead of being online all time in social media. It drains our energy.
- In the end “Your time = Their Money“ and Social media is the new smoking
- There are so many apps available in AppStore, it does not mean we need to use every app to find some meaning in life.
- My rating: 5/5 and good book for students.

3.0 out of 5 starsdigital minimalism - a philosophy that tells you to be more intentional with our online time.
Reviewed in India on 19 May 2021
So at first I read this book with a little hint of scepticism and the beginning pages wasn't that good either but later it got so much interesting and I got intrigued so much that I devoured this book in less than 3 days, given I read this book in my leisure hours. this book endorses the philosophy of digital minimalism where the author provokes readers to leave all the social media apps for a substantial period of time, it can be 30 or 31 or 38 whatever you think is reasonable and reintroduce these attention-craving apps back into our life considering certain prerequisite questions that you ask yourself before introducing back into your life, sounds aggressive, right! some people might be thinking that's too extreme but he has his reasons and he explains them one by one. I think we all felt that these social media apps consumed so much of our time for no reason at all. I read at least an average people spend more than 3 hours on social media, which can be spent on high-quality leisure activities like learning to play the guitar or read books or any hobbies that make your life meaningful. If you think about it, these social media apps caused more harm than any good, so many people showed behavioural addictions especially teenagers who are more prone to addictions. I remember when I deleted some of the social media apps, I definitely showed some withdrawal symptoms. But again instead of antagonising the social media tycoons, it's also about time we also take some responsibility and accept that we also have something to do with this addiction too. social media is a double-edged sword. This book contains so much more, I definitely recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for the present Smartphone-addicted GENERATION!
Reviewed in India on 11 June 2021

Why everyone should read this book –
1. It talks about the need to reduce smartphone usage.
2. It talks about how smartphones are turning into an addiction. (Phone addiction is a thing.)
3. It exposes how social media companies are deliberately making their apps more addictive.
4. It stresses the need for purposeful smartphone usage.
5. It offers great strategies to reduce screen time and enjoy your life outside the screen.
6. It may even change the way you use your phone.
The long Version -

There's an old saying, "You must be using the tool, the tool mustn’t be using you". The same thing applies to a smartphone. It must be used just as a tool, but if you find yourself reaching for it every minute, you must realize that that it is using you. We must recognize that this smartphone usage is turning into an addiction and take steps to prevent it from becoming dire. If you spend more than 4 hours a day on your smartphone, you must realize that you're addicted to it and it's bad.

As with every Cal Newport book, he divides the book into parts. In the first part he argues the need for digital minimalism and what makes smartphones so addicting. In the second part he offers various strategies and steps to reduce compulsive smartphone usage and how to use your smartphone in a purposeful way. The book was successful in explaining the ill effects of smartphones. It talks about how an entire generation got ruined because of social media. We must realize that phones are getting addictive year by year with constant new apps buzzing for our attention. The strategies in the book are easy to apply and have the potential to change the way you look at smartphones.

Digital minimalism is a book that should be read by everyone living in this present world. In a world where social media companies are earning billions, and a common person is wasting away his life looking at a screen, we must realize the need for "Digital Minimalism” and strive to adopt it. This book will help you with that.

Having read 'Deep Work' and 'So good they can't ignore you' from Cal before, I can say that this book extends the ideas mentioned in the previous books from a digital wellbeing perspective. chapters on not using social media app, reclaiming leisure time and preferring conversation over connection have a deep and well researched insights.

I have read another book, Deep Work by Cal Newport. It is an insightful book. Would recommend it for academics.
This one is better than the former. It is practical, easy to catch and properly organised for a broad spectrum of readers. So, you can start with this one if you want to read his other books too.

After My love told me the benefit of reading self-help and all kind of book, I choose this book for me. I'm terrible at reading, can't focus always seeking my phone. For the first time reader it's seem boring but as i was going through i was started love it.

The book tells you what is DIGITAL MINIMALISM by through out many example of other minimalist and many more thing can't explain here. But the thing is that if want buy this book because you want focus in life and get off your attention from your DUMB PHONE then implement those practice that told on the book otherwise it will be waste of time...

TIP: when you got free time and seeking for your phone, don't go it just pick the book and start reading. and one more thing you can't understand all the thing that are told in the book by just reading one time you have to read multiple time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, helpful book on rethinking your relationship with technology
Reviewed in India on 6 October 2021

What I enjoyed most about this book were the actionable tips. From recommending that one remove apps from phones but stay logged onto browsers if one was afraid of losing out, to finding creative, engaging hobbies before one cut-down on social media, to prioritizing the accuracy of news over the promptness of Twitter, and to encouraging conversation over connection, it was helpful without making technology the boogeyman.

There is no doubt that the attention economy is built to monopolize your time, and the way the social media platforms swerve around discussions related to it suggests something fishy is at play. I'm aware of the irony of writing this review on a platform I wish to disengage with over time but it is time to question our level of engagement if the platforms erect a wall when we question their intentions. It's been a week that I've removed a bunch of apps from my phone and I am now aware of the knee-jerk response I have to taking my phone out to fill time. I do believe I will be able to stick to the changes recommended within the book, and that's more than what I expected to get out of it so it's a ringing endorsement from my end.

The book is received by me on 26th January, 2022 as a replacement due to the book being dirty. Now, the replacement is not good as well but this needs to be gifted so won't be returning it further.

Please see for yourself for reference. The photographs are after I meticulously cleaned the book as a much as I could because I couldn't see the condition of the book as it was delivered.. I am disappointed.

Regarding the content of the book, those who are ready for a change, will find this book surely helpfull. But you got to accept the problem and be mentally ready and disciplined to act on it.
Thank you.

The author's intention is good, which is to wean away readers from an overattachment to digital devices. The book begins well. But the solutions it offers later are as if they are treating drug addiction or smoking or drinking habits. The book then becomes boring and unpractical.
