2.0 out of 5 starsA CRIME CUM LEGAL THRILLER FILLED WITH FLAWS...
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 13 August 2020
Unlike most of the crime thrillers and legal thrillers, this is a novel which is both a crime cum legal thriller. Speaking about the novel, let me say that the readers won't get bored while journeying through the novel. Usually, when a reader comes to know that a particular novel claims to be a legal thriller it is quite normal that he/she expects the same to be something which also gives a clear picture about the way the law is enforced and the functioning of the Courts. But as a lawyer who witnesses the daily business of the Trial Courts on the civil and criminal sides, I must say that the author has committed certain serious errors that not only give a wrong picture about the enforcement of the law to readers who are not familiar about the enforcement of the criminal laws in India but also have influenced the plot of the novel in a considerable way such as:-

a) Firstly, in a criminal case which is instituted by the police, the complainant would be the "State". Though the complainant in this novel is the relative of the victims who is represented by the State, the cause-title ought to be "State of Maharashtra v. Prem Bedi". But in this novel the cause title of the case was "Prem Bedi v. State of Maharashtra" which happens only at the appellate stage if the Accused is aggrieved with the verdict of the Trial Court and appeals to a Higher Court;

b) Secondly, a Trial in a criminal case, as per the Code of Criminal Procedure ("Code"), kick-starts against the Accused only when the police files a final report and all the relevant documents which discloses the commission of offence(s). Once the Court accepts the report, frames the charge(s) and kick-starts the trial, the Police is barred by the Code from conducting any further investigation. But in this novel it was disappointing to note that a forensic investigation happening during the course of the Trial;

c) Thirdly, after the conclusion of a criminal trial, the Court shall, before pronouncing a verdict of whether the Accused is guilty or innocent, as per the Code, listen to the closing arguments of the prosecution and defense. But let me say that in this novel the after the examination of the witnesses the Court dismisses the case on the ground of prejudice on the basis of the result of the aforementioned forensic investigation;

d) Fourthly, a petition which is filed either by the Prosecution or the Defense in a criminal case for any miscellaneous purpose is termed as Criminal Application/Miscellaneous Petition. In this novel, such applications are termed as "Motions";

e) Last but not the least, when a lawyer agrees to represent his/her client in a criminal/civil matter before any Court/Tribunal the latter appoints the former by siging a document known as "Vakkalathnama" which is filed before the Court in which the case is taken up. In this novel, the author refers to that document as an Agreement.

Hence, I would say that it is a decent one-time read. But considering the flaws/improbabilities that I came across while journeying through the novel, I would give it only 2.5 out of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love thrillers and crime fictions, this book is for you.

As we know, the word "Mogul" represents an influential and powerful person. And this story belongs to Prem Bedi, a prominent figure of Mumbai. He has inherited wealth, business, fame and a lot of luxuries from his ancestors. But, he made himself worthy of the same. Not only he managed the business, resources, properties, and other stuff brilliantly, but he also made the things grow positively as well.

When he was on a business tour to Korea, he was contacted by Mumbai police. He came to know that his ex-wife was murdered! On prima facie, it seems the case of robbery gone wrong, but there can be another angle to it as well! Prem flies back to India, in case he was needed for any last rituals of his ex-wife, as her (current) husband is also dead!

Mr. Mehta, younger brother of Prem's ex-wife's husband openly accused Prem of the murder(s)!

Who will stand with Prem and who will go against him in the challenging time(s)? Will Prem be able to get out of the tricky situation unscathed or he would be punished? And, by the way, who committed the crime? And why Prem is dragged into the case?

All these questions are better to get answered by reading this book.

Views and Reviews:
Vish Dhamija is an excellent author. His vocabulary is so rich and his way of elaborating a scene is really fantastic. What I like the most about his writing is the way he infuses sarcasm and humor (which is not always dark).

The book explores that no one is black or white. Each of the characters has his/her shades of grey. But surely some of them are whiter than the others and vice versa. While we have an ACP who is genuinely doing his duty, there is a DCP who has his own preferences. So the author tried balancing the things and showing both the sides of the coin.

Strong characters are a positive attribute of the book. Vish takes enough time to build characters. And, we see grey shades in the characters which makes them more realistic. The author is good at building tempo and explaining scenes. What I like is the way he describes the history of important places during the course of events.

The book has the dose of sarcasm. For example:
Bureaucracy is funny until you see just how comical politics can get.
— — —
So in all those years have you ever come across a “not exactly” that translated to a “yes”?

The high morals and ethics or a character are explored through small yet effective lines like:
Tej, if you aren’t caught stealing, it does not mean you never stole.

Rating:
I would give it around 7.5 stars out of 10.

!The Mogul! yet another master piece from the pen of Author Vish Dhamija.

If your a fan of crime thrillers and legal dramas then trust me this book is for you.
For me its the best legal fiction of 2018 I can say so far.

Though there is none Indian legal fiction writer, you can certainly say that Vish Damija is ruling on this genre at present in India and I don’t think so anyone can beat his story and research work. His research and efforts can easily be noticed when you read this masterpiece. I had pre ordered this book as soon as the slots were open and eagerly awaited for the day for The Mogul to come in my hand and I start reading it, to finish it as soon as possible. I have already finished all previous books of Vish Dhamija and this one surely is dear to me and will remain in Top row of my personal collection.
I guess I won’t have anything else to read after this…till Vish Dhamija’s next book comes.

Amazon spoilt my mood and did it late for delivery. I chased the customer support like anything to get the book. It came late, like a week after its released and meanwhile I had searched it in like half a dozen book stores in my city and called more than a dozen other stores asking if they have this book available in their store.

Ugh finally it came after a long wait and it got completed in just a couple of days…and I must say that wait was worth it.

This story mainly is not about -Who Dunnit?, but about -How its Dun??
The book starts on a mild note and takes the twists and turns and paces up. At each chapters you feel you are getting more bounded to the book. The characters are so nicely portrayed and hand crafted you feel connected to them the moment you read them. The
story narration is so smooth and written in a simple understandable language, The most interesting part about the book is all chapters are narrations by each character and the narration is their perspective for rest of the characters and the circumstances. As an writer myself I feel its a hardest part to write and move the story forward with perspectives of various different characters. The Court room trial scenes are very edgy and nail biting. The arguments, the points by points case study and objections shows the depth of research done by the author. As usual the end is just surprising, like you know it but you exactly does not know the end. The master stroke is the last chapter by the protagonist by himself.
The use of a loophole in law is an eye opening point in the story and really awesome.
Overall must read I can say. Thoroughly enjoyed THE MOGUL.
I gave it the 5 well deserved stars*****. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AUTHOR!!!!!

As always, the author has delivered yet another mind-blowing thriller blended with excellent narration and well edited court room drama which is absolutely crisp and not dragged unnecessarily. One could imagine the characters and narration as if it is happening in front of your eyes. Language used is simply delightful with out complex words and confusing scripts. Being a big fan of author, I have not missed a single book so far. No wonder why he is called "The John Grisham of India".

The Maestro has done it again! The Mogul is a fabulous read that one cannot put down once you’ve turned the first page. Vish has once again put forth a legal thriller that not only has a watertight plot, but also shows his in-depth research and flair for holding the reader’s attention till the very end. A Sterling piece of literary work ...looking forward to the next one. Keep them coming, Vish!!

An interesting read, Just when I started to doubt the calibre of the author for making things too obvious, I had yet to complete the last part. The last part did the entire justice to the book. I will read more of his books, as I liked the phrases he used
