This book is quite different from the first one, which focuses on Paxton almost exclusively. The plot broadens and the number of main characters increases, which is a bit of a surprise at first. However, it broadens in a good way and the story is engrossing. I was a bit reluctant to read this series because the idea of a young man with a psychopath mother is overdone, but what Humphreys does with the idea of an evil mother is really interesting and different -- not at all a rehash. You'll want to find out what she's up to, why she did what she did, and what is going to happen next to everyone.
I do like the series. Would love more details on Valentine. I’m reading the next book already, I need to know what happens. If you like Harry Dresden this is almost the same. Magic, wizards. evil beings. Devine intervention.
