Japanese Reader Collection Volume 1: Hikoichi

I like the book and the audio is great. I am working through the book with my Japanese tutor and she likes it too. The downside is that for some reason, this book does not function properly with my Japanese pop-up kindle dictionary. I have 4 J-E dictionaries and none of them work properly with this book. My dictionaries' pop-up features work when I highlight words in other dictionaries so I think there is something about this book that it doesn't work with the dictionary feature. The book has complete vocabulary Japanese to English glosses and explanations in the text, which is fantastic, but I would like to read the Japanese only version with my dictionary to help me learn more about the vocabulary in other contexts. Is this issue a bug or was the book designed that way because of all the English in it? Anyway, I still recommend the book for the great stories, Japanese to English vocabulary glosses, audio and included English version. Just don't expect to use you Kindle Japanese Dictionary with this series.

Hiragana won't show up under the kanjis on Galaxy tablets...

If you intend to use it on a Galaxy tablet, you won't see the hiragana under the kanji.

My intend with this book was to work on my reading, but because the hiraganas weren't showing up, I barely read few pages from it.

No Furigana

One of the main reasons I bought this book was because it was said to have furigana in the text. As such reading this was slow going because I had to open up my kanji dictionary constantly. Would have been five star if not for the lack of furigana.

The content and format is fine as a whole, but formatting on my Android Kindle app is not very good. Vocabulary words are frequently on the divider line between the paragraph and running glossary, and annoyingly the kanji do not have furigana appearing above them even though they are mentioned in the introduction. Would recommend getting the paper version instead if these problems are on all ebook versions..

Useful in practicing reading Japanese. I enjoyed reading the two short stories. Their is even a part before the story that shows you the vocab that you will come across while reading. Worth you time if you are trying to learn Japanese, their is no better way to learn to read a language than by reading it.

While the reader is for folks who have mastered the kana and who are reasonably comfortable with Japanese sentence structure, it is a useful tool for learning kanji and vocabulary. All of the kanji are provided with furigana [yomigana or rubi]. However, the Japanese is not formal Japanese.

The kanji are small, but readable on my Kindle. There should be same way the resize them.

The running gloss is helpful and even though my nihongo vocabulary is limited, I was able to understand the story consulting it.

There could be some grammar, would be really helpful.
