This book is on a first or second grade reading level, but the stories in this book are WAY too scary for a second grader. Broken toys that come to life to punish the child that let them be broken, a hair stuck in a child's throat that turns out to be a rat. And those are the least scary! A first grader may not fully understand the scariest stories in the book, but a second grader definitely would. This is not a book I could put out in my classroom because it would give quite a few students nightmares! I'm not sure who scholastic what initially targeting with this book, but it shouldn't be 7 year olds!
My 4 & 6 year old LOVE this book! We have read it almost every night since it arrived. Before it came I was a little worried it might scare or give them nightmares, but once I read through it (by myself first) I realized I had nothing to worry about; it’s perfect for young kids. My 6 year old especially likes it because she thinks it’s not “babyish” (which is THE highest praise these days). Because it’s an acorn book she can just about read the whole thing herself too. Our favorite stories are the “noise at the window” and “hair down to my belly”, which seem to be drawn from the same vein as the “Scary Stories” book series I loved to read as a kid! We can’t wait to read the next Mister Shivers book!
My daughter requested a scary book to read and I came across this and went ahead and bought it for her. Great "scary" book for young readers! My second grader (7yo) reads this to her younger siblings and they all enjoy the stories. Not too scary, just the right amount of creep for little kids. No one has been actually scared by anything in this book (youngest is 4) and they all have a little giggle at the stories afterwards. Very cute and creepy book for little ones. My 7 year old easily reads through the book in the evenings when they are wanting to hear a scary story. The statue story is everyones favorite! They joke about him stealing their blankets. Would love the author to write more of these books!
My 6 year old says this book is scary and I enjoy it for the most part but I don't know about him lol. It seemed to leave things off where the mind has to imagine what happened after instead of giving an actual ending. It bugged me a little bit
The many children of relatives and friends visiting us have been looking for quick reads with a twist. These are brilliantly crafted, beautifully illustrated, often quite funny, and always surprising stories. A hit!
