To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I have read, but not necessarily finished, quite a few of these bargain-priced collections. Usually I don't bother to write a review except to try and warn people of the worst I find. This one, seven "books" in one volume for a pound, I actually enjoyed almost from the start. In a crowded part of the e-publishing world this little beauty stands out by a mile, in my not-so-humble opinion. I had to make myself pause every so often to slow down, and actually I am at 98% right now, and composing this review trying to think of the bad points I came across. Ummm….just a few typos, and that's it, I think. Good job everyone. A very well spent pound indeed.
An enjoyable read, with characters I warmed to and worried about. A future world that's not much to many we've read about before, but no less a decent read because of that. The main focus is on the experiences of those at the bottom of society, those who search the vast junk piles and abandoned urban landscapes for anything they can eat or trade for necessities, while the rich live in enclaves, buying tickets to go into space to a planet that is essentially new earth. I sometimes found the switches into different times quite disorienting, though at the same time, it have an immediacy to the telling of Jack's past that would be lost if told from the current day perspective. I would say that it's worth being aware of page count, this entire series is about 500 pages, so each of those 7 "books" is a short novella; personally I'd classify this entire series as a single book.
Beware - I purchased books 1-7 for 80p or so I thought. It appears not, as I only received series 1 and part of series 2. I tried downloading it on both my Kindles - I got the same result. That old saying springs to mind - If it seems too good to be true it probably is. I'm a Prime member. I'm willing to accept that I've misunderstood the wording on the offer unless someone else has had the same problem
This book series trundled along at a good pace and I got behind the characters. I have given it a 3 star rating because I was thrown by the abrupt ending. I wanted to know what would happen next having followed them through the story and it spoilt it for me.
Good storyline, more gritty and realistic than the normal post apocalyptic stories. Despite the relatively short story there is enough detail to develop a liking for the main characters, I really enjoyed my time reading this book.
Really enjoyed this. Read it while on the treadmill daily to recover my fitness post op so it was a great distraction from that effort. Simple and complete series which is always a winner as I hate having to wait for the next volume to find out what Has happened to characters. That said, I am now kind of curious to know whether there is a ‘what happens next’ and think there is mileage left in the plot and characters. Will now be looking at others by same author.
Interesting concept, slightly awkward start but definitely improves as the storyline unfolds. No real mystery or twists just a straight forward adventure yarn with a reasonable protagonist and an enjoyable read.
