I find myself agreeing with some of the previous reviewers here, which is something I rarely do but... I was really surprised with the first volume of this massive set, I found it a refreshing point of view, with a promising twisty tale to follow. And then the quality of production dropped slowly, until at the halfway mark things really came down with a bump to remind me this was found in the bargain basement. I was amazed at the space devoted at every break to thank the volunteer readers, and dumbfounded to see the fastest readers being congratulated. If I had volunteered my help with this collection I would be embarrassed to see my name in print within. Finally I hated to see the author, who is apparently English, apologising for using "Britishisms". Was this actually produced by am AI system? Is it all just a test? It cost a quid, so why am I even bothering?
I loved this series, not your usual zombie story. The characters feel so real and the situations they have to endure are graphic while being entirely necessary to the plot. Absolutely great, I've read it at least 4 times now, something I rarely do.
Unusual twists, lost interest a bit on book 3 then after a few weeks picked it up again. Books 8 and 9 are a bit of a odd read and wasn't really keen on the fanciful conclusion in the end I found myself just reading it to get it over with as I'd already read the other 7 books, which were quite good. I just lost interest in the way the plot went in Book 8 which introduces a character with the surname "While" is a bit of a strange thing to do as you end up with sentences that you have to read twice as establish whether it's the name or the noun. For example "While searching While thought about ...." just seems an unnecessary complication when there are so many other names the author could have chosen. Perhaps it's a name drop to a friend. Anyway will see it through now I'm this far.
I got book1 in an anthology and it was a standard zombie novel with a few twists but thoroughly enjoyable and whet my appetite to read more. I purchased the complete box set and carried on. Book2 started OK but then started to go down different avenues, a major twist occurred about the behaviour of the zombie and then things got weird. As the books kept coming they got more strange with pseudoscience and mystic stuff (over and above zombies!). I ploughed on and finished the series since I wasn’t going to give up and hoped things would get back on track.
Can’t recommend the series and won’t be reading this author again.
I don't get as much time to read as I would like. However, these made me MAKE time to read. The premise was not your usual 'zombie' fodder. The characters were so well described you could actually feel that you knew them. I could picture them so easily and the horror was very real. I shed a few tears reading these, uttered a few curse words in my head ( ok, more than a few at times) and was engaged throughout. Yes, at times, it seemed unlikely some situations would happen but when I read books like this I'm more than happy to escape into a world where some things are fantastical. If you like the zombie genre - you will love these. It was at times introspective, exhilerating, exhausting, devastating and a little 'out there'. But ALWAYS compelling reading and a very satisfying outcome. Highly recommend it.
By the time I got to book 6 I actually felt guilty that I had paid so little for such quality books. I read a lot of dystopian/apocalypse/zombie books and the cheap box sets are usually good but have their errors, and quite short stories. I remember getting to about book 3 and only being 11% done and being so happy about it. I honestly can’t believe the work that’s gone into this series and in a short period of time, Judging by dates and events mentioned in the books. The storyline is so captivating, so different to other zombie books, so detailed, and you find out everything, how it all began and ended, such a complex storyline, but so well told. The flow is brilliant with just enough description of the scenes. I’ve never liked “Listening’ to books, but had to rig my phone to screen read at time’s because I couldn’t put it down but had to do things!! If you like these genre, you have to read this series!! Bravo!
What can i say, took this book at the beginning of the corona virus, and i can honestly say after only getting part way through book 2 that the end of the world would be a good thing if means i dont have to read this book anymore. After submitting this review i will be deleting it and ive got to say it also deserves to be at the bottom of the sea.
This book is so good, with brilliant characters. If you like post apocalyptic books this is for you. The storyline is farfetched but it has you gripped, you hardly notice the typos. I would highly recommend this series, especially the price. Will be sad when I have finished it.
