5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Greek Cookery

I love the twists on the recipe, I have tried about 7 recipes up to now and enjoyed them all. They are lighter than traditional Greek food I am used too. The studs do and sea bass recipes are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational collection and beautifully written

I don’t usually watch Masterchef, but I did see the author of this book on a couple of the shows and was impressed that an older female was giving the younger contestants a run for their money. Her approach in the kitchen was orderly and she seemed grounded and unflappable.

I’m delighted she won and her new career choice as an olive oil sommelier is an amazing choice. This collection of recipes is an absolute delight. I love the way she writes and puts each section and recipe into context. Even browsing, it’s clear to feel the passion she has for good, honest food and she’s familiar with traditions and origins. I’ve learned a great deal about the way of life and food choices and reading the recipes, you can almost feel the warmth of the islands and the aroma of the food.

It’s well laid out with sections on starters, meat, fish, vege, desserts, celebratory meals etc. There are no weird ingredients or complicated preparation. I’m not familiar with Greek food; I like to eat it, but don’t cook many Greek dishes. This book will change that and I’ve started with her lamb recipe which is an absolute cracker, and so easy. Brilliant addition to my collection and I think I’ll be buying this in paper format too. I bought the 99p ebook which works well on ipad, but this is a book I want on my shelf too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb range of recipes!

I have been using this cook book for a month now as part of a book club, cooking at least two recipes a week. I have no experience of Greek food having never been there but this wonderful book has given me a great range of dishes to try. So many are on the "make again" list, the mustard and lemon potatoes with biftekia (burgers!), the slow roasted lamb with garlic, herbs, lemon, mustard and honey, the grilled lamb cutlets with baked onion and lemon and egg sauce to mention but a few! The loukoumades ( dough balls) with mulled apple puree is a lovely desert and was very popular with my sweet toothed household.

The recipes are well written and easy to follow with information on where to find the ingredients that are not so available (not many!). There is an informative introduction to Greek food. Irini's inspiration for her food is her childhood and the great cooks in her family, her enthusiasm for her native shines throw the book.

I have so many left to try!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on Greek cusine.

I thought this would be a great introduction to the cusine of Greece and in some ways it makes the grade. There are some lovely stories of Greek childhood and family life and many authentic recipes. However, I was disappointed that some of the recipes were a twist on other more familiar cusines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this on your return from Greece

Under the Olive tree, is not a book to be purchased on your way back from a beautiful holiday in mainland Greece or the iconic islands. This is a cookbook to be purchased before going to Greece, either to experience its culinary beauty or in preparation for what you are about to enjoy. I am certainly taking my copy with me to Lefkada in September. Under the Olive tree is both heartwarming and heartfelt, as they say cooking comes from the heart and this book certainly captures the spirit of that statement. This review is a little unfair, as I have had the privilege to work alongside, chat with, compete against and talk to the wonderful author that is Irini. Having said that I have also cooked two of the recipes since purchasing and they are every bit as good as they sound. Contestant 2019

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Presentation But....

...quite limited on the number of actual recipes, especially considering the length of this book.

As a vegetarian, I didn't find anything here that really appealed to me, enough to make.

This is more of an autobiography with some personal recipes included, not an extensive recipe collection as I was expecting. I have returned my Kindle copy for a refund.😕

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another cookbook! A masterpiece!

So excited to receive my copy. I’ve followed Irini all through her wonderful Master chef journey. Being a complete Philhellenism (lover of anything Greek), this beautiful book is now an integral part of my collection. The photography is absolutely beautiful and reminds me of many trips sampling these dishes in the flesh. I love the spin of some classic a Greek dishes. The most loved part for me is the introduction where it gives you an insight to Irini’s past and how she has merged her 2 worlds together. There are a number of dishes that I will dictating to my husband to cook , but really looking forward to King Prawn, peppers, ouzo and feta (Saganaki) as this is one of my favourite dishes when I visit Crete. Highly recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as hoped.

I bought this cookbook because I adore Greek food. Unfortunately there was far too much family information. I was hoping many more photos to go with the dishes so I could visualise the recipe and choose what I would like to cook. I have bought better cookery books that really teach me about the culture and ingredients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part Autobiographical, Part Greek Deliciousness

I’ve always loved Greece and this book gives a flavour of what it was like to spend a childhood there and then move beyond to recreating delicious recipes in England. Greek food often seems rather heavy. Really tasty but solid. Here Irini Tzortzoglou has a collection of recipes, beautifully photographed, which aren’t at all out of place in today’s lighter, but tastier, meals. All those familiar ingredients are here, lamb, cheese, favs beans, greens and tomatoes and a few which I don’t recognise but some for which she gives easier to find alternatives. The ingredients list is a trip to
Greece in itself. This is a wonderful book to delve into when you need some sunshine and some inspiration.
