I read this story with my 10-year-old and she loved it.
The story is about a family who plant an orchid plant and they take good care of it. They water it, make sure it is well looked after but it doesn't flower. Even as the children grow older, they continue to hope that if they keep looking after it, it will eventually bloom. But does it ever flower?? You'll have to read it for yourself to find out! I don't want to put any spoilers in here!
I liked the book because the story is really positive, it shows that you shouldn't give up on something which doesn't develop at the same pace as others, it also shows the lovely tender way a family can have a tradition which brings them together. I loved how looking after the plant bonded the siblings well into their older years. I also like the way it is written too; because it's set in Puerto Rico there are several words which are used within the diaolgue which makes this story authentic and I love the atmosphere of the place; the heat, the exotic fruit... really paints a lovely picture.
My daughter said she enjoyed the book because she wanted to know if it would ever flower and she didn't want me to stop reading until she found out! She said she also liked the fun things the children were doing - playing with horses etc.
I think this is a really beautiful story that children and grownups can enjoy together.
Beautifully written and illustrated, this is such a sweet story. With great messages for kids about caring for things and perseverance, I think many of us who are adults but who have lost elderly parents will also find it meaningful and somehow comforting.
Filled with hope and promise, this story is about the passing years as Aurora and her 4 children take care of a plain green orchid plant. She assures her children that one day it will flower and look beautiful. With perfect timing, the plant eventually flowers when Aurora’s grown up children need it the most.
I enjoyed the story and it is a gentle reminder that not everything happens immediately. Sometimes, it takes weeks, or months, or even years. Like with this unique orchid, it will take love, patience, and caring before it blooms.
What a sweet story. I love the introduction of Spanish words in a manner that children can follow and understand. The message about having patience using an orchid is very creative. Who hasn’t stared at an orchid and thought it would never bloom! Highly recommend.
This is a great book that teaches kids several lessons; about being patient, about tradition, love, family, and loss! It’s written and illustrated beautifully. Love the messages it teaches and I recommend this book!
Amazing story! So many life lessons are written into this book. Patience, the importance of family and how our loved ones never leave us even after they have passed. Definitely one to read to your children or for those that need a reminder of what is important in life.
