It is never too early to help children understand the importance of voting and SOFIA VALDEZ and the VANISHING VOTE is a great book to introduce the topic. In this latest title in The Questioneers chapter book series, Sofia’s teacher announces that the class can vote on a pet for the class. The class narrows the choices to two and each side vigorously campaigns for their choice. Sofia is appointed as the election commissioner and soon realizes how challenging it is to ensure a fair election, especially when her two best friends are on opposing sides. Fortunately, she receives wise advice from her abuelo and the local librarian. Students will enjoy this well written and entertaining book as they are introduced to issues such as fake news, good journalism, boycotts, and the importance of voting. The book features a diverse class of students and adults and is filled with fabulous illustrations, charts, and lists. Highly recommended!
We love The Questioneers series in our house! Sofia Valdez and the Vanishing Vote is a great addition. My 6-year-old would not put it down. It was great to have on hand during election season, and we've had multiple "votes" in our house because of it.
Andrea Beaty has created characters that kids want to emulate, and Sofia's social activism has made a huge impact on my daughter.
Sofia Valdez and the Vanishing Vote (and any of the other books in the series) is great for kids moving into novels but still want illustrations. The writing and subject matter are perfectly in tune with the intended audience.
