When I pick up a book by Ms. Levenseller I always know it will be a fun and entertaining fantasy adventure to escape into. This story resonated with me just a little deeper because of Ziva the main character. She is a blacksmith who can imbue her weapons with magic. When she is hired by a warlord, she creates a magical sword and realises that the weapon is too powerful to let fall into the wrong hands. So she is forced to go on the run with her sister.
I really liked Ziva. She is flawed and vulnerable and so very human. She suffers with social anxiety and oh boy did that resonate with me. I had total empathy for what she goes through when the anxiety hits, and the author did such a fantastic job of portraying just how anxiety can attack your thoughts and your body against your will.
As she and her sister go on the run, they are joined by a mercenary and a scholar and I enjoyed watching them form their friendship on the road. The sibling dynamic between Ziva and Temra was interesting to follow. There is a touch of romance in here too, and I found it quite sweet, if a little untimely given everything that's going on.
There needs to be more female blacksmiths in fantasy books! It just hits the right note for me and I would love to see it more. It's been a while since I've read an 'on the road' fantasy story and I had forgotten how much I enjoy these types of adventures. I had such a fun time with this. It moved at a fast pace and was under 400 pages so I inhaled it in one evening and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
At first I didn’t know if I would like this book due to the main characters internal banter of social anxiety being so strong… HOWEVER it quickly changed with action, romance and 2 moments that actually made me gasp in the last 50 pages. The way it ended I sincerely hope there is a second part because it was abrupt though it made sense. There is just so much more that I need to know about what happens next. Overall great addition to my home library and will for sure recommend!
This was such a precious, fun adventure story with a fantastic anxiety representation which was so refreshing to see in a fantasy story! I could definitely relate at times.
The sister bond between Ziva and Tamra was just so special! I loved how they looked after each other. And the boys were both just sweethearts! Their journey together just made me happy! Kellyn had me especially swooning! The romance was a slowburn but it had me wearing a big old grin and feeling all the butterflies!
The plot is pretty simple but I actually enjoyed the simplicity of it and the magic! I do wish the book has been longer rather than been broken up into two books though. I'm curious to see what all happens next! But I'm definitely EXCITED to read more! Another fantastic story by Tricia! Also, crossing my fingers for MORE kissing and mature YA content. 😜 🤞🙌
