My favorite baby gift is to give the Tomie DePaolo books...Poems, Nursery Tales and Mother Goose. Beautiful illustrations grab the attention of the young listener ( and parents) as they listen to their parents' voices long before they understand language and enjoy the meaning of the words. My kids loved them, my grandkids love them and we continue to share them with all the new parents in our world.
I love these classic fairy tales, with a slight Tomie dePaola twist. I have been reading two stories from it a night to my kindergartener since it has arrived and he loves every minute of it. It has a good selection of all the classics and even some that I am not familiar with. I was disappointed that I could not purchase it new, however, I ordered it used in good condition and it arrived in better condition than I expected.
My daughter teaches 4th grade and is very pickey about what books I purchase for her 1 and 3 yr old, but this book was one they had gotten from the local library and she asked me to but it for them. The illustrations are lovely and give a reader much more to note as you read the nursery tales. Highly recommend!! This granny loves to read from this one and even the 1 yr old stays still for a half hour of reading from this one!
Tommy dePaola is a master at story telling and our daughter just loved all of his work as she was going from cradle to first grade and beyond. I had friends that just had a baby, and bought this as a gift that would be treasured over time. The words are simple enough for a wide range of ages and the art work is absolutely fantastic and age-appropriate. I highly recommend any of Tommy's books for young children and the parents should read from these books every single night for many years.
My kids favorite book growing up. They wanted their dad to read these stories to them over and over! Great for reading in different voices for different characters. They knew these stories by heart and would greet word changes when reading with , "No daddy! It says this..."
Our favorite gift to give to kids. Have always been told later how much it is cherished.
I was very disappointed with this book. We had it on our bookshelf when I was a child, but never read it. Now I know why. The stories have no sing-song quality or rhythm, and many of the sentences go on and on and on. The pictures are fun, there are lots of great stories, I just don't think they are told well.
What a wonderful book to share with my new grand-daughter. The illustrations are large and colorful and the book has all of the "oldies but goodies". "Hey, Diddle Diddle," and "Hickory-Dickory-Dock" are two of our favorites.
