This book is all about Josh, and how Josh likes to tattle. Being a first grade teacher I have a lot of "Joshes" in my classroom. I used this book in my tattling vs. reporting lesson to share with students when they should be problem solvers and when they need to get other adults involved. It has great examples of what students should do in different situations. It has helped out my class so far this year!

I really like Julia Cook's books. I was first introduced to her books by my partner teacher who shared My Mouth is a Volcano with me. I am a third grade teacher and I had a class of students this year who really enjoyed tattling on each other. I was at my wit's end when I came across this book on Amazon. I ordered it immediately and was not disappointed. I knew Cook was reliable for elementary age appropriate books but I try and preview books as much as possible so that I am familiar with the subject matter and have good talking points, etc. so I decided to read it to my own children who have been known to tattle on each other and on friends from time to time. They instantly loved it. I would definitely recommend this book for children pre-K-2 range who are prone to tattling or for building community. Cook clearly identifies Danger Rangers and Tattle Tongues in the book and makes it perfectly clear when you Chou,d be either one of them. Having these names to use as common vocabulary with my students and my own children makes a tattling conversation very quick as all I have to say to them is, "Are you being a Danger Ranger or a Tattle Tongue?" and it immediately stops when I call them out on it. My third graders were fine with this book especially since they were such Tattle Tongues themselves but I don't see this being used with an age range higher than that. Cook does not disappoint with her content choices in this book and it really helped my children and my class have an open and honest conversation about tattling.

I bought this book because a little girl in my son's 1 st grade class was telling on him making him upset. Once he misbehaved and he told the principal when she went to the classroom just for a visit which I found extremely wrong. She also told me, at pick up, that my son had misbehaved in school (nothing major, he didn't want to write that day) but my son is the first who tells me when he misbehaves so I already knew and again I thought the girl's behavior was inappropriate. So I started looking for a book on tattling and I found this one. I was invited to be a mystery reader for the class and I brought this book specifically for that little girl to listen to (my son may misbehave but he would never tattle on someone).
The part I found funny was M.Y.O.B, so every time I read that I was like:"mind your own ...." and the kids would all scream "business!!!" And I would say "...or beeswax" (which is what the book says). By the end some kids started saying beeswax too, which made me laugh.
And when I was done I asked "so kids, if someone misbehaves in class do we run telling their mom??" And all but 1 kids yelled "nooooo!!". You can imagine who that kid was.

Really enjoyed reading this book with my kiddos. It gives a lot of perspective on when to tattle and when not to. My one child who polices the house has been able to relax more by not feeling she has to tell on everyone all the time. She even tells other when it is an appropriate time to tell on others and does keep the book close to her to show. I think it has helped develop more natural consequences for behavior then tattling would. Without being told on the child has to deal with the other children and frankly they can be harder than an adult would be. A friend not wanting to play with you because you called someone a name is much more powerful than a parent telling them to apologize. Behavior modification tends to happen faster and sticks with them.

Name calling = No one wants to play with me (kid thinks, I better change things or I will be playing by myself) Natural consequence, Lesson learned

Name calling + Tattling = Mom says to say sorry (kid thinks, no big deal they still will play with me) No lesson learned here (in my opinion).

I have a classroom of tattlers this year and this was a GREAT book to read to them. I even made an anchor chart to go along with it. Now, when I get a tattle, I reference the book or the chart and they promptly stop. It helps me take the harshness out of "STOP TATTLING" and make it more about "you don't want a tattle tongue". It also helps them to know the four rules to tattling.
