I started reading the Skullduggery Plesant series 12 weeks ago and have just finished book 15, I am so happy to learn that more will follow. These characters become like friends and family it is almost a bereavement loosing them. It is good to know that in the form of Derek Landy we have our very own Darkess.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Misstep In A Great Series
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 10 September 2022

Wow! There's a lot going on in this book. In fact, way too much
I would say as I lost track along the way of all the conspiracies
and counter conspiracies and which menace was the current problem.

In the previous installment, the series main hero, Valkyrie Cain,
on a trip to the future, saved her sister from becoming the conduit
for the Lovecraftian "Faceless Ones" to return to the world by
inadvertently becoming that conduit herself.

It was a life changing experience and one that put her as a player
on the dark side of the board as becoming "The Child & The Mother"
has aligned her with her Faceless One children in a kind of maternal
magic mind-control backlash. This has cost her her girl-friend, the
trust of her other friends and, sub-rosa, the trust of her family
and gained her the animus of the magical population. The only one
who has stood by her is her once mentor & now partner Skulduggery
Pleasant (and even he clearly has a down-low anti-Faceless-Ones
agenda).

With Valkyrie & Skulduggery removed from opposition, the high priest
of the Faceless Ones has been able to bring all the magical Sanctuaries
under his control, and has made the magical world into a facist
religious dictatorship. That's not to say that with Valkyrie &
Skulduggery gone there is *no* opposition. Obviously Temper Fray
is going to continue to fight against the cult he was raised in,
and the help of China Sorrows is nothing to sneeze at. Omen Darkly
is on-side, but has his own problems with the disappearance of his
brother Augur and general flakiness from his erstwhile mentor
Crepuscular Vies.

Things come to a head when the human world becomes aware of The
Faceless Ones, their monstrous hangers-on, and wizards in general.

As I mentioned up top, I just found this one too involved. I
couldn't keep straight who was whose child, who had loved whom,
what all these new family members all over the place meant, and how
many potentially world-ending conspiracies and menaces were actually
in play at the moment. I also did not like the denouement at all,
as it displayed Landy's lack of understanding of the US (again),
implied that we, the readers, were probably bad people, and finally
pushed a big "Never Mind" button. There was also a moment with a
temporarily-fleshed Skulduggary that is going to upset a lot of
people.

I found this installment a rare misstep in a usually very entertaining
series.

On the plus side, the mystery of Sebastian was finally explained.

I began this series with the first book and have enjoyed the ride so far. Derek Landy has written the most thrilling tales of a lovable skeleton detective and his human partner. If you love magic and mystery, this series is for you. :)
