A new series from a cozy mystery author who I've read 2 series of her books in the past, St Marins bookshop and Stitches in Crime.
This series is about a rare book buyer, Poe Baxter sourcing books from around the world for clients. She travelled this time with her best friend from schooldays and colleague Beattie and her hamster Butterball.
When a rare book which purports to have a curse upon it comes up for sale, Poe's first job is to buy the book for a client who wishes to donate it to the Scottish library. When the seller is found dead, Poe and Baxter are drawn into the mystery of who did it and why. The book is set in Scotland, a country close to my heart.
I'll admit, I didn't take to the book as I have the other 2 series, I didn't dislike it but I didn't fall in love immediately with it, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. That said, I'll buy the next book in the series to see where the story goes.
Beattie and Poe are on a buying trip for a rare book for Poe's uncle. Should be an easy trip, buy the book, and then sell it to the national library,do some sight seeing, and head home. Sometimes things just don't work out the way they are supposed to. Great story following the girls around Scotland.
For the first book in this new series, it was ok. I will have to read the next one to decide if I will continue with the series. There were way too many typos. Missing words, names wrong. I reported most of them through the "report content errors" section. No way of knowing if they will be corrected. She even messed up the Detective's name once. The author's other series Stitches in Crime is much better and I have never seen the errors like I saw in this book. Slow down please and make sure you've done your proofreading and used spell check.
I loved the fun characters, the bit of romance, the mystery of the water monsters of Scotland. A new rare book dealer just learning the ropes gets caught up in the legends of water monsters and a cursed book. A wonderful fun read.
I was so happy to receive this free ebook. I enjoy book dealers and solving cases. This was definitely a quick read and page turner. I like this first book. Curses, mysteries and shady clients. Enjoyable.
I was interested to see what type of person Poe Baxter would be. I enjoyed the adventures of Poe, her friend Beat tie and their furry traveling companion. A little adventure and a little romance. It was an enjoyable read.
I haven't read the author's other series and found this one a little odd. Who takes a hamster on a business trip to Scotland? Do hamsters really need to go out for walks? Why talk about her best friend's transgender journey? Seemed out of place in a cozy mystery though socially relevant Why all the touchy feely stuff between the friends? More questions than answers and a lot of mistakes typing.
Nice little mystery, specially if you like books and want a nice glimpse of Scotland. Cute touch, though a bit unrealistic, to add Butterball the hamster to the story. The police investigation was also unrealistic. Overall the story holds your interest making it a good addition for a public library.
