If you haven't read any of the starship mage books, I highly recommend reading the first one, as it introduces the characters and concepts of this awesome hybrid universe. This book is not a jumping on point, but if you read it completely out of context of the rest of the series, you would still be in for an amazing journey with spaceships and magic. Much harder Sci fi than you would expect from a series with magic, and an extremely well thought out magic system, if that is a nitpick of yours.

Stewart manages to balance the three plot lines he sets up in this novel and weave them together to a satisfying conclusion. The characters get a decent amount of development, and I'm content with the ending.

The only nitpick I might have with the book is that it doesn't move the series metaplot as much as I would like, but that was likely a result of the author choosing to make an independently compelling story.

All in all, if you are a fan of this series, read this book all ready.

If you are a fan of Sci fi or fantasy, and have been on the fence about this series, Start with The Starship Mage.

If you are a fan of both Sci fi and fantasy, then move Starship Mage to the front of your reading list. You will not regret a single moment you spend in their universe.

Even though it was sometimes a bit too long and drawn out, overall this series has been one of the best sci-fi stories I've read.

There is nothing better than a well told story, and this book / series is one of the best! Great characters who are also believable people, tons of action, etc. Everything you can ask of any book 😀

4.0 out of 5 stars The Chase is afoot

Good follow on to the earlier books of trying to resolve the civil war. How to find the remaining members of the RIN and bring their forces under control. A nice link in the story to two other “concerns” one of which has been floating around with no answer since Damien defended a world from orbital bombardment. Will be interesting to see where the story moves to next.

4.0 out of 5 stars These folk are at war - nasty things happen in wars

I like the frame of reference of the Starship Mage and this book develops its main character nicely.

Alas one of the things she has to learn is that people you know die in war.

I didn't give this book 5 stars because too many people with potential plotlines I wanted to explore in future volumes didn't make it to the end of this plot arc.
