The Trail of Blood by Sourabh Mukherjee is a crime fiction novel. I have read the author's previous work one of which had a collection of true crime stories based on women murderers and I quite enjoyed the book and the author's writing style.
The story revolves around singer Deboleena's life and the mysterious circumstances around her demise. Detective Agni Mitra, battling with his traumatic past but is the best in the field, got on the case of solving the crime and unearthing the motive and murderer. The story shows the life of Deboleena, her family, friendship, flashback to the past, and a psychotically obsessed lover. Will he be able to identify the killer and solve the mystery or the past will repeat itself?
The story had two timelines except for the flashback of her life. The author has penned it beautifully with an easy-to-follow storyline and without hindering the reading experience. I liked Detective Agni Mitra's character and his unique way of thinking and deciphering the crime. I would have loved to have a little background about the characters cause it helps in connecting with the character and their way of thinking.
The language is pretty lucid and beginners friendly. It's a fast-paced storyline with small chapters. The narration could have been a little better. For crime fiction, the book was severely lacking in a thriller. It just didn't get me excited at any point but didn't bore me either. It's a good book for beginners in this genre.
