My 2 year old son adores this book. He loves ghosts. He used to be a bit scared by them but he got over that fear and now loves saying 'ghost'. His favourite episodes of kids shows are the Halloween ones so I figured a Halloween book would suit him quite well. It follows a nice little rhyme and each page is beautifully decorated with plenty of little details for kiddies to look at.
*SPOILERS* This book starts with a cat and dog (two of his other favourite things) in the woods at night. It then counts down from ten to one. For instance 5 spiders, 3 suits of armour, etc. (Those are the only two I can remember right now.)
The cat and dog eventually get to a castle where the spooks have a big party which ends in them falling to sleep. So I imagine it would be OK for a bed time read (depending on how easily scared your little one is).
The spooks in the book are: witches, spiders, ghosts, trolls, skeletons, wizards, suits of armour, owls, creepy cats and then there's the last one, but it's pumpkin pie. So if your little one likes those things/is ok with those things, then you should be onto a winner.
I bought this book for my 3.5 year old son who adored "Dinosaurumpus" and saw this one at that back of that book. He loves it, probably not as much as "Dinosaurumpus", which is the only reason I'm giving it a 4 and not a 5. The words are written with great rhythm and the pictures are great.
Excellent book, me and my 4.5 year old were a bit nervous about reading it, especially at night time, but it's fun, and all the (gentle) spookiness turns out to be a party and then they are all tucked up in their beds - really recommended for a 'thrill' but still a good night time story.
I've been a primary school teacher for 20 years and have read quite a few books to kids during that time. Since I bought Spookyrumpus in 2005 it ranks as my best failsafe read any time of the week, even to Year 6's. You know it's great when you read it on your own and laugh. A modern classic.
Was a little worried when ordering this book as my little girl scares easy. But this book is so much fun and the spooks in it are not at all scary. Have to read it at least twice a day since we got it.. very much recommend it.
My son loved dinosaur rumpus and now loves spooky rumpus. It is a silly story with a nice rhythm. Good fun with funny illustrations with lots going on. My son loves counting the different spooks at each bit. Good bedtime story where all characters go to sleep at end.
Brilliant book for young people, my 3 year old loves it, holds their attention well, and lots to talk about within the book. Fab bedtime reading, especially as all the spooks go to sleep at the end, and so does my 3 year old!
